MSLD 213: Performance Consulting

Drake University is accepting visiting students for the course Performance Consulting, part of the Talent Development concentration in the Master of Science in Leadership Development. This course is typically offered in the fall. Please refer to the information below. You may contact Dr. Cris Wildermuth for additional information.

The goal of this 3 credit course is to help students understand the origins of Human Performance Improvement - a systematic approach to achieving the desired performance state at an individual up through an organizational level. Students explore the different components of the HPT (Human Performance Technology) model by determining gaps between actual and desired performance, finding the root causes, recommending targeted solutions, and evaluating the results of different interventions within a systematic framework. As a Performance Consultant, you will learn how to apply the model, utilizing best practices and consultative approaches. You will also hone your coaching skills by working with classmates and colleagues.
When is the course taught?
Due to COVID-19, in the fall of 2020 this course will be offered via Zoom, including ancillary online materials.  You should reserve three  Friday nights and Saturday mornings for the Zoom classes: September 25-26, October 23-24, and November 6-7.  Friday sessions will probably run between 6 and 9 and Saturday sessions between 9 am and 1 pm. 
About the facilitator
Dr. Sheila Grebert leads the SBD Learning and Development team at Principal. This team of 15 learning and development professionals supports six different business units providing new hire and ongoing training on both technical and soft skill training.   In this role, Sheila consults to identify and address development needs, coaches, designs training, and facilitates classes on leadership and other topics. She is also the leader of the Learning and Development Community (LDC), which is the organization-wide learning and development group. 
 
Sheila received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Central College.  She continued her education by earning both a Master of Higher Education and a Master in Adult Learning and Performance Development with a concentration in Leadership and Human Resources from Drake University. In 2012, Sheila also earned a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership from Drake University.
​Objectives
Following this class you will be able to:
  • Discuss the history along with the originating concepts and theories that have contributed to the fundamental elements of the HPT model. 
  • Describe Human Performance Improvement as a discipline, along with its purpose, use, value and limitations. 
  • Describe each component / phase including the “how and why” of the HPT model: performance analysis, intervention selection, design and development, intervention implementation and maintenance, intervention evaluation and change management. 
  • Identify and apply specific tools / practices related to each phase of the HPT model in various scenarios and case studies. 
  • Assess situations and select interventions that directly align with an identified root cause, resulting in improved performance for individuals, groups, and organizations. 
  • Execute each phase of the HPT model in an identified real-life situation. 
  • Apply and practice consultative skills optimal per phase. 
  • Demonstrate effective peer coaching skills that will support the learning of teammates and foster a learning environment outside of the classroom.

Visiting Students
